About The Rice Village And Museum District Neighborhoods

Located near Galveston Bay and the Gulf of Mexico in Southeast Texas, Houston is the fifth-most populous metropolitan statistical area in the United States. The city’s strong cultural ties and wide variety of exhibits attract more than seven million visitors a year alone to Houston’s Museum District, which is home to nineteen museums, galleries, and community spaces. The Museum District was founded in 1977 to provide easier access for everyone, no matter what income bracket, to the education the museums and galleries provided. Each museum, gallery, and space is unique for the art, education, and information it offers. The District’s Four Zones cover a wide variety of disciplines, including sculpture, abstract art, performance art, kid spaces, history museums, and more.

For visitors and residents who love to shop, make sure to mark Rice Village as the spot to visit! The area’s collection of shops, restaurants and pubs extends over several city blocks, and is located within easy walking distance of Rice University. Founded in the 1930s as a cluster of retail stores, the Village grew to become a premier shopping destination. With over 300 shops, including a wide variety of independent makers and small boutiques, you are guaranteed to find something for everyone.

Things To Do In The Rice Village And Museum District Areas Of Houston

Just minutes from Rice University is a shopping haven known for its eclectic mix of one-of-a-kind boutiques and brand name stores. Locally known as the Village, the area has been a popular shopping destination for over 90 years. If you are new to Texas and want to get into the true spirit of the area, your first stop should be at Tecovas. The business was born out of a love of finely made cowboy boots for men, which is shown in every boot that is made in Leon, Mexico. Over 200 steps go into making a single boot by hand, and each is crafted by a team of trained artisans skilled in the craft of fine leather shoemaking.

If you’ve found that you want to continue to shop but just don’t have any more energy to spare, sit down and relax at one of the best places to eat in Houston. While the Village offers a wide variety of delicious foods from all over the world, El Meson is a longtime favorite of Houston residents. The Spanish and Latin American restaurant offers a hearty menu of tapas like codorniz al vino, grilled Texas quail with garlic in a port wine reduction , and piquillo peppers stuffed with cod fish béchamel. The menu reflects a range of culinary traditions, and includes Tex-Mex, Cuban, and Spanish entrees.

Houston’s Museum District has many interesting galleries and museums to explore, including the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft (HCCC). Founded to advance education about the history and creation of craft, HCCC emphasizes objects of art made primarily from craft materials, such as: clay; fiber; glass; metal; wood; and recycled materials. Since its grand opening in 2001, HCCC has become an important cultural and educational resource, providing exhibition, retail, and studio spaces to support the work of local and national artists.

The Rothko Chapel opened its doors in 1971 as an interfaith sanctuary and center for human rights, as well as a one-man art museum. Fourteen paintings by abstract expressionist Mark Rothko are at the center of this Houston landmark that was commissioned by John and Dominique de Menil to encourage cooperation between people of all faiths (or of no faith at all). As you approach the Chapel, make sure to take a moment and enjoy the Broken Obelisk by Barnett Newman, a steel sculpture set in the middle of a pool so that it appears to be floating on the surface of the water. This gravity-defying artwork is by itself worth a visit!
