Once you start exploring the many wonderful shops such as Reeves Antiques, Stag Provisions for Men, and Leopard Lounge, it may be hard to remember why you gave yourself a budget!
The Rothko Chapel opened its doors in 1971 as an interfaith sanctuary and center for human rights, as well as a one-man art museum. Fourteen paintings by abstract expressionist Mark Rothko are at the center of this Houston landmark that was commissioned by John and Dominique de Menil to encourage cooperation between people of all faiths (or of no faith at all). As you approach the Chapel, make sure to take a moment and enjoy the Broken Obelisk by Barnett Newman, a steel sculpture set in the middle of a pool so that it appears to be floating on the surface of the water. This gravity-defying artwork is by itself worth a visit!
Buffalo Bayou Park is 160 acres of natural scenery, bike and running trails, performance spaces, kids’ play areas, and more stretched along Allen Parkway. With its wonderful views of the bayou and recent upgrades, it’s no wonder that the park is a popular place to visit year-round. The park even has separate large and small dog enclosures for dogs to run and play. At night, take a stroll along the Waugh Bridge where you can see Houston’s famous Waugh Bridge Bat Colony takes flight.
